Understanding Halal Certification for Frozen Protein Exports from Brazil

Brazil is the world's largest exporter of Halal-certified frozen poultry, but not all Brazilian facilities carry equivalent certification. Here's what importers in Muslim-majority markets need to verify before placing an order.

Brazil exported over 4.5 million tons of poultry in 2024, with a significant proportion destined for Muslim-majority markets across the Middle East, North Africa, Southeast Asia, and West Africa. Halal certification has become a baseline requirement for buyers in these regions, but the certification landscape is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

There are multiple Halal certifying bodies operating in Brazil, and not all are recognized by importing country authorities. The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA), the Halal Food Authority (HFA), and Brazil's own CDIAL Halal are among the most widely accepted but buyers in Malaysia, Indonesia, or Saudi Arabia should verify that their specific importing authority recognizes the certifying body listed on the product documentation.

Beyond the certification body, buyers should also confirm the scope of certification. Does it cover the full processing line, or only certain product lines within the facility? Is the certification current, and does it extend through the expected shipment period? These are questions that should be resolved before an LOI is submitted, not after a contract is signed.

CAPA Trading Corp works with a curated network of HACCP-certified, Halal-certified Brazilian processing facilities. Our compliance team verifies certification currency and importing-country recognition before any transaction involving Halal product specifications. Full certification documentation is provided as part of the standard shipping document package on every Halal shipment.
